Let me say this before I start. If you don’t like my honesty, please, stop reading now(said like a meditation tape about operating heavy machinery). I think the close Mercury/Uranus squares is one of the very hardest aspects in the chart. Why is it so hard? I will try to answer that question.
Mercury is the mind. It is a very sensitive spot for the person. One’s mind needs to be balanced or one will be in for a ‘world of hurting”. Balance allows for a wide spectrum of quircks. No one is “normal”. Everyone is a nut in his own way. Everyone is a weirdo in his own way. If one can get along well enough with others and one can keep the laws, one can live in “normal”society. Within that spectrum, we have the very balanced people to the very unbalanced people.
How does the Mercury/Uranus square fit in here? First of all, the very close square is much more difficult than the wider square. The very close square would be exact to four degrees. The wider square would be five to ten degrees. When the square is very close, the native’s mind RACES. Uranus rules electricity. Think of being around a constant hum or a constant buzz. It can drive one crazy. That is the constant nature of the close square. The person is brilliant. His brilliance is “out of the box”, such as that of a brilliant inventor. However, the price he pays is not worth it, in my opinion. When the square is further apart, the naive retains the brilliance, but the buzzing mind is diminished. It is still there, but it does not have the same intensity.
If I had to try to make this really practical, I would point us to times when our mind won’t stop, for whatever reason. Perhaps, someone has hurt us or betrayed us and we replay it over and over. Perhaps, we are afraid of an upcoming event and we think, think, think and think about it. Perhaps, we have met an amazing person and we can’t stop thinking about him/her.In these instances, our mind will not shut down. We can’t help it. This is how I would describe the nature of this square.
